The Durham City Induction week ran from Monday 30th September and ended on Friday 4th October with a scavenger hunt around the city. The weather was gloomy and miserable (much like my student bank account…) despite this, the turnout was great with many students turning up to participate.
The hunt began outside the School of Education building. Groups were organised and team names selected. The atmosphere went from relaxed to competitive. The tension heightened. It was like watching Rocky fight Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, except the only thing missing was Eye Of The Tiger and Stallone’s dodgy accent. The teams dashed off in attempt to answer as many questions correctly in the shortest time possible. The gauntlet was laid down by the Foundation Centre and the teams rose to the challenge.
The teams navigated themselves across the city centre, answering questions about local landmarks and University facilities.
‘Team St Butwoods’ were spotting sprinting across Palace Green, a team so fast that even Usain Bolt himself would have had difficulty catching them.
Teams gathered answers. This involved lots of pointing, contemplative expressions and ‘are we going the right way?’ questions before crossing the finish line at St Marys College.
The results were in. Before the winners were announced, they recuperated with a free lunch. It was going to be a close call, the teams had all performed well! Therefore the warm beverages were consumed in the quiet knowledge they were all winners. Except the actual winners who won. They were…..St Butwoods.
The fast paced antics of this team had paid off, with them winning some free Durham University goodies. Well done! Also, thank you to everybody who took part and I hope you enjoyed your first week as students of the Foundation Centre.
